The Gospel and Serving
Jesus is the greatest servant the world has ever seen and the God to whom all our service is due.
Jesus Christ has no rival and no equal. He is the Son of God, from whom, to whom, and through whom are all things (Romans 11:36), eternally exalted as the “heir of all things” (Hebrews 1:2 ESV) who “upholds the universe by the word of his power” (Hebrews 1:3). There is none greater and none higher.
Out of his great love, he made himself low for us (Hebrews 2:9). He came down from the heights of the heavens and clothed himself in servants’ robes (Philippians 2:7–8). God created us to serve him, and he took on our form to serve us. The Son of God became human because he loves humans so much.
Then, he served us by doing what we could never do for ourselves. He knew, loved, and obeyed God above all else—from his very first breath in the manger to his final cry on the cross (Philippians 2:8). He lived every bit of his life to save us by serving us (Matthew 20:28). He rose again, victorious over sin and grave, to give us the riches of his inheritance (Romans 8:17). Then, he ascended back to the heavens (Acts 1:9) to take his seat at the right hand of the Father, while he waits for all things to be made subservient to him (Hebrews 10:12–13).
Now, our only reasonable response to our loving, servant God is to offer our lives back to him as his servants (Romans 12:1). He gave all that he is for us, and we offer all that we are back to him.
One primary way we serve God is by serving one another. God’s love motivates his service, and he is honored when we serve each other as an expression of our love.
While the servant identity looks different for everyone, God has given you specific gifts so that you can give of yourself for the good of others. Through serving, we all grow together to be mature like Jesus (Ephesians 4:13).
